click for larger image89: 1793 1/2 C MS60 Brown NGC. 1793 1/2 C MS60 Brown NGC. C-3, B-3, R.3. Breen State III with considerable reverse die rust through much of the wreath. Manley only records a single die state for the variety. The bust of Liberty on the obverse has a hooked bust line, and the reverse has the U and A crowding the stems. These features combine for immediate attribution of the variety. The 1793 half cents were the first of the denomination coined at a young Philadelphia Mint, and they followed the Chain and Wreath cents into production. Mint records indicate that 35,334 pieces were minted, and each of the four die varieties were probably struck in about equal numbers, considering that the rarities are nearly identical. Breen believed that the 7,000 coins delivered on July 20, 1793, represented the entire production of C-1, and that the 3,400 of September 18, 1793, represented the final examples of C-4. That left 24,934 coins delivered on July 26, for all of C-2, C-3, and the balance of C-4. A mintage of about 9,500 to 10,000 coins each seems to be about right for C-2 and C-3. This delightful example has satiny medium brown surfaces with a few tiny rim bumps, but no other problems on either side. Some might consider the obverse planchet marks and laminations to be "problems," but they are exclusively mint-made and have no actual affect on the grade. This piece almost reaches the Condition Census for the variety, and is easily among the top 10. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Auctions, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
