Description
This medal was issued to recognize and honor Euaenetos, an artist of the highest skill in ancient Greece. Euenetos was commissioned to make the decadrachm, a silver piece of ten-drachms to commemorate the Syracusan victory over the invading Athenian forces about 400 BC. The original coins were presented to warriors and others who had a part in the victory and later to winners in athletic contests. The obverse of this medal depicts the victorious chariot quadriga with the driver receiving his award garland. The reverse shows a symbolic ancient temple dedicated to Euaenetos in recognition of his artistry in design and execution of the original coin. His high relief coin was more of a medal and this decadrachm is considered by numismatic students to be one of the most beautiful coins struck. A fine piece for your ancient coin display. THIS MEDAL COMES WITH ORIGINAL BOX AND DESCRIPTIVE LEAFLET. This 76mm medal was struck in bronze with a high copper content and shows a beautiful and colorful patina. The medal is the fifth in a series honoring famous coin and medal designers and engravers. Issued from 1961-1964 were the following: Augustus St. Gaudens for his 1907 Double Eagle; Victor D. Brenner for his 1909 Lincoln Cent; Charles E. Barber for his 1892-1916 series; Christian Gobrecht for his Flying Eagle 1836 Silver Dollar; Euaenetos for his 400 BC decadrachm of Syracuse; and a dual recognition medal for James B. Longacre for his 1859 Indian Cent and George Morgan for his 1878 Silver Dollar. These medals were also struck in 76mm in limited .999 fine silver issues. The eBay business is new to me but I have been in the coin and medal business in the past and did work with my father (designer of these medals) in sales. My dealings with you will be honest and prompt. I will ship to USA Priority Mail and will send over the 'ocean'.
