Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, its celebrates the 150th Anniversary of Australia's first Sovereign, which was produces in Sydney in 1855. The discovery of payable gold in New South Wales in 1851 lay behind the establishment of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, which opened on 14 May 1855. The Sydney Mint produced its first Type I Sovereign, featuring a unique colonial design shortly afterwards on 23 June. Leonard Charles wyon's historic Type I reverse, which depicts St Edwards crown and a laurel wreath, is reproduced on this new sovereign. Like the original coin, it also includes the inscritpion One Sovereign, as well as the words Sydney Mint and Australia.
