Description
To celebrate the year 2000 and the Millennium, the Royal Canadian Mint released a special circulating commemorative coin with a unique, one-year-only design. This features a mother polar bear and two cubs on it, the famous "Family of Bears" image. It is also known as the "Path of Knowledge" toonie, with the image representing the mother bear teaching her cubs and imparting her wisdom and experience on them. Immense…pristine…untamed… the polar bear personifies the land it calls home – Canada. This proof $2 gold coin contains an inner core of 22 karat gold (91.67% gold, 4.1% silver and 4.23% copper) and an outer ring in 4.1 karat gold (17.2% gold, 77.6% silver and 5.23% copper). It has a diameter of 28 mm and weighs 11.40grams. The reverse of the coin, designed by Tony Bianco, depicts the polar bear with her cubs. The obverse portrays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
