The reverse depicts Zhao Gongming, the folk God of War and Wealth. Also recorded on the medal is the precious metal content.Zhao Gongming, otherwise called Marshal Zhao or Zhao Xuantan ("meaning black god"), is considered by Chinese Taoists as the Law Enforcement God. It was said that he attained Taoist enlightenment in Zhongnan Mountain during the Qin period.Afterwards he was sent to be a guard for the Heavenly Teacher Zhang Daoling (one of the immortals) who at that time was said to be making pills of immortality in Dragon and Tiger Mountain. For his service, he was named Marshal Zhengyi Xuantan. Various ancient handicrafts depict Zhao Gongming as a military officer sitting on a black tiger wearing an iron hat, his heavy beard hanging from his black face, holding an iron whip and a shoe-shaped gold ingot in his hands.Legends tell of this god breaking up thunderstorms, guarding against lightning and eliminating diseases and disasters. He commanded four gods; the Treasure Recruiting God, the Rarity Accepting God, the Wealth Recruiting Envoy and the Auspiciousness God, and could therefore bring prosperity to businesses. As a result, he was considered the God of War and Wealth. Still today, Marshal Zhao is often likened to wealth and money. The Certificate of Authenticity included reads:"The 1989 Chinese God of Wealth gold medal is minted by China Mint Company and distributed by China Gold Coin Incorporation. The proof gold medal is 60 mm in diameter, 99.99% in composition, containing 156.25 grams of pure gold and has a mintage of 500 pieces only.
