The reverse of each coin bears the new legend "Republic of Trinidad & Tobago." Appearing with this legend is the national coat of arms, combining natural and historic themes with heraldic symbols. The upper portion of the shield portrays two beautiful hummingbirds, native to the islands, and the lower portion depicts the ships of Christopher Columbus, who discovered Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad was a Spanish possession until 1797 when it was seized by the British. Tobago was first occupied by the Dutch and changed hands 31 times until it was formally ceded to the British in 1814. The two islands, southernmost in the West Indies chain. became an independent nation in 1962. The new Republic of Trinidad & Tobago came into being on August 1, 1976   This set comes in a green case with a gold coat of arms, green velvet insert and sealed in its original card and  sleeve.
