Description
There is something very charismatic about this beastly medal and I always get a little bump in spirits whenever I run across it, which is infrequently I might add. Some medals just have it, if you know what I mean, and I include this among them.It is listed in Hibler and Kappen's book So-Called Dollars as number HK-740 where they state that it was struck for the 30th Anniversary celebrations of the Paramount Pictures corporation. While I have every reason to believe this to be the truth, I have also been told that these were used as Silver Dollar stage props in westerns and such. I don't know if this is true but it does have the ring of truth to me. Anyway NGC shows only two of these have been graded. The highest grade, which I submitted by the way, is AU-58 (I was robbed). This is the second best one that I've ever seen rub on high points and all. (In fact, I think the rub enhances the look of this great medal). Most of the ones that I have seen are really gnarly and beaten/chewed up. The reason for this is that the medal really is struck in copper, a soft metal, and one suspects that the striking company ACME Metal Die, no joke, perhaps were closer to their nadir than the apex they proclaim to occupy.Anyway, this is a superior example of this particular HK number in my opinion. Even though it is not in as nice condition as the one I submitted to NGC it would not surprise me in the least if this too rcvd an AU-58 grade.
