Description
You are bidding on one 1916 Proof Barber Dime. The coin in the photo is the coin you will receive.Shipping is free for this item and will be sent with delivery confirmation. Insurance is required at $10.00.According to Breen's Encyclopedia this coin is unknown to exist. It is known that a few semi-prooflike 1916 Barber dimes exist and are presumed to have been business strikes which were struck from the die which was specially made for striking proofs. Some authorities incorrectly state that a coin can look prooflike if it is an early strike from a normal die .If this were true why are there no prooflike Peace dollars? Morgan dollars were struck in proof and these same dies were then used to strike business strikes which looked like proofs until the die wore down. This coin was not buffed or polished. These are not flash photos. The coin has mirror surfaces and the reflection from an ordinary desk lamp is so intense that the camera has to filter most of it out and the white coin holder turns black.I presume that this coin was struck to test the proof die pair and then escaped the mint.Records state that no 1916 proof Barber dimes were struck, but the existence of this coin represents clear proof that a proof die pair was made in 1916 because it is impossible to get mirror surfaces like these from a normal business die pair .I bought this coin at an auction 12 years ago.The auction catalog listed this coin as Proof 67.This coin has been in my NOT FOR SALE box for 10 years.Any reasonable offer will be considered. If the coin does not sell I'll send it out for certification.I reserve the right to end this auction at any time. Will ship within two business days of cleared payment.
