The surfaces of the coin are very smooth with no detracting marks to speak of. Both the obverse and the reverse have an even, unblemished quality which has resulted in a solid AU55BN rating from NGC.   This special specimen came from a mintage of a mere 484,000, the lowest mintage ever seen for the Lincoln cents. With almost all of them put into circulation, or destroyed during the massive bullion melts of the 1930s, 1909-S Lincoln cents became one of the rarer Lincoln Penny to this day. 1909 Lincoln Cents struck early during this first year of issue depict the initials "V.D.B." at six o'clock on the reverse. As many complained that these initials were too conspicuous, they were later removed by the Secretary of the Treasury, making VDB cents quite rare.   My conservative estimate on the value of this 1909-S Lincoln Cent in AU55BN grade would be $1,800.
