Description
1901-O Barber Quarter in About XF or to be more precise...VF-35. This coin has been in my personal collection for at LEAST 20 years and I only just recently found a better grade to replace it with (although unfortunately it's not original like THIS coin is!) The pictures are a pretty close representation of what this coin actually looks like so for ONCE, I'm happy with the photos and won't complain. :) Considered to be a very scarce date in all grades, many were lost in the great silver melts over the years or just totally wore out from use. The total mintage was lower than average and they just weren't saved by the general public. This piece, which saw only a short time of circulation, still managed to survive without being cleaned by someone or suffering any damage to the rim which is amazing in itself. The coin is well struck considering the Mint and the overall color of the coin is a nice medium gray. Here's some actual rarity info so you can see just how hard it is to find this date: The book on the subject, The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters by David Lawrence states: "Very Scarce. Considered the 6th or 7th toughest date in the set but may actually be scarcer than the 1913-P." I can attest to this fact as when I hoarded 1913-P Quarters back in the 1980's out of about 300 pieces I was able to buy, only about 10 were in VF & XF while this is the ONLY VF or better 1901-O I have come across in many years (which explains why it ended up in my personal collection for so long!) The book also states: "This coin is on almost everyone's want list when just a few coins are needed." (sic) 'for set completion.' Currently PCGS shows a TOTAL of just 85 coins slabbed with only 16 in the VG-VF grades (they don't differentiate individual grades unfortunately) and just ONE full XF-40! NGC has an even LOWER total with just 39 total and only THREE of those are VF and FOUR XF-40! The Barber Coin club did a survey not long ago of it's members (who tend to hoard better dates) and they came up with 19 coins in VF and 12 in XF but since this was reported by actual owners of the coins I bet you my firstborn that a buncha those are overgraded and just wishful thinking...AND it doesn't mention if any are cleaned or problem coins which I'm sure are included! The survey gives the 1901-O a rarity rating of R-4 which is: (May or may not be available at larger shows or auctions." Guess what? I'll bet you my 2ND born that it'll be a buncha shows before U even find one for sale as nice as this one and TRY to find one fairly priced! For those interested this has the #301 Mint Mark Position as shown on page 54 of the Reference book mentioned previously and has the mint mark "closer to the R." eBay does not permit me to quote prices from any price guide so you'll have to look it up for yourself. (Sorry!) Bidding starts at a VERY reasonable $379.99 for this SUPER tough, problem-free coin in a high mid grade! Buyer pays $12.75 for P&I. Payments by PayPal or money order will get the item shipped the next day after receipt or the SAME day if I can manage it. Personal checks held 7 work days (or less) to clear. PAYMENTS ARE DUE 7 DAYS AFTER MY E-MAIL INVOICE. Full 10 day, (from shipping date) return privilege, as long as the coin is in it's original holder, AND YOUR PAYMENT IS ON TIME. (S&H is non refundable but fear not as i RARELY ever have coins returned and my goal here is to sell you coins you will thoroughly enjoy in your collecting endeavors.)
