Description sharon1a Store   WILLIAM MAHONE SIGNATURE!  1872 STOCK OF THE ATLANTIC, MISSISSIPPI & OHIO  RAILROAD COMPANY!  # 489 This is a beautiful historical 1872 certificate, that is very ornate and detailed!  Wonderful vignette of an early train full speed ahead on the tracks.  NO cancellation holes or slits!!  SIGNATURE IS CLEAN - NO HOLES! Three large revenue stamp is printed in the center.  Very ornate stock, the company was headquartered in Petersburg, Virginia.  Signed by the treasurer, James E. Cuthbert and the the president, William Mahone. The A M & O was formed in 1870 in Virginia from 3 east-west railroads which traversed across the southern portion of the state.  It was organized and led by former Confederate general William Mahone (1826-1895), the 428 mle line linked Norfolk with Bristol, Virginia by way of Suffolk, Petersburg, Lynchburg and Salem. Mahone was active in many Civil War campaigns and was an able leader during the war, best known as the hero of the Battle of the Crater in 1864 where he rallied troops and foiled an initial Union success during the Siege of Petersburg.  He also became a member of the Virginia General Assemble and U.S. Congress.
