Description
This auction is for an 1869 New Mexico Mining Company Stock Certificate. On the back of the certificate it is signed by Dolores Perea Connelly. There are some tape markings on the back of the certificate. Otherwise, it is in very good condition. Henry Connelly was born in 1800 in Nelson County, the son of John Donaldson and Frances Connelly. His ancestors in America were heroes of the Revolution, fighting in the patriot armies of Washington, Greene, Morgan, Gates, Lincoln, and Pinckney. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Connelly Governor of New Mexico on September 4, 1861. Connelly was a strong Unionist. In December 1861, he demanded and achieved the repeal of the Slave Act of 1859 which protected slavery in the territory. With the support of Governor Connelly, the Union forces defeated Confederate troops at Peralta in April of 1862. At the end of the Confederate threat, Connelly turned his attention to the Indians. Connelly offered them the choice of life on the reservation or death. In the early stages of the Mexican War, Connelly used his contacts in Santa Fe and Chihuahua City to play a diplomatic role between military forces of Mexico and the United States. After the peace, he permanently settled in New Mexico and in 1849 married a wealthy widow, Dolores Perea. She came from an upper-class family at Bernalillo and had married a rich merchant, José María Chavez of Peralta, just above Los Lunas. Chavez, who owned a vast estate with a sprawling adobe hacienda, was governor of New Mexico when he died in 1844.PLEASE READ PAYMENT AND SHIPPING OPTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING.
