It was struck at the Philadelphia mint with gold sent by Military Governor Mason (230 oz.) from California, struck with the letters CAL. on the reverse, and sent back to California to be used in commerce for the burgeoning gold rush. There were only 1,389 pieces struck for this purpose, and few of these survive today. NGC has graded only 4 AU50's and 36 in all higher grades. This coin is also pedigreed to the Richmond Collection on the holder. JBH & Co.
