Description
1845 Seated Half Dime "richmond Collection" NGC PF 65 www.paulhollis.com 1845 Half Dime “Richmond Collection” NGCPF65 BUY IT NOW $32,750 Early proof coins are notoriously rare. This coin is actually as rare as the Ultra High Relief Saint! While that coin is worth well over a million dollars, many of these early proof coins offer more rarity at less far less money. As the market recognizes the undervalued nature of these pieces, it is possible that they will continue to escalate in value as they have done over the last several decades. Keep in mind that this was nearly a century before the mint began striking proof sets for collectors. During the 1800’s, it was not uncommon for a President to request proof coins to be struck by the mint to be given as gifts to visiting foreign dignitaries. Andrew Jackson did it all the time in the 1830’s. In fact, in the 1860’s, Abraham Lincoln would cross the street at the White House and check out the telegraphs whenever he woke up early. (Alexander Graham Bell personally installed the first telephone in the White House years later so we don’t have to worry about seeing GW cross the street the next time we are visiting DC. President’s have routinely requested the mint to strike their friends coins and they would even give them to Congressmen as well. Numismatic experts estimate that only 10 of these proof examples were struck. Even John Jay Pitmann was never able to acquire an 1845 Proof Half Dime for his collection despite years of searching. (His collection was worth over $20 Million Dollars). Only two examples have been certified in this grade with only a single example finer. Keep in mind that a Bowers and Merena auction brought $27,500 for a comparable coin in March of 1998 – Nearly 10 Years Ago! A richly toned coin with an overlay of turquoise. This is a superb presentation piece and will be a cornerstone to any museum quality rare coin collection.
