The other is also now on eBay. Both are issued to Ladies Charity School Society and have pinholes in upper left where they were apparently pinned together. Both have the signatures of the president, Eliza Fludd, of the Ladies Charity School Society on back. Strangely, the later one of 1834 is on hand laid paper. The earlier one of 1829; however, is of early date machine made paper, mass produced.  Guaranteed original in all respects is this 20 July 1834 (9?) Four Share Certificate. This is signed by the second Bank President, Godard. Embossed Bank Seal in the lower left. Paper in good condition, handle with normal care. Measures about 7.375 by 9.875 inches. The Union Bank of South Carolina was one of two original banks in the state of South Carolina. I believe it was chartered/opened in 1801 based on the date on the Bank Seal. In addition, the Bank was one of the first chartered banks in the United States. Remember that Charleston rivaled New York, Boston and Philadelphia as a major center of commerce up to the Civil War. The Union Bank of South Carolina was a victim of the 1870s Reconstruction Era and Depression; dissolved in 1879.  Want to keep apprised of future offerings?
