Professionally re-backed. Cover is clean and bright with some light spotting and corner chipped paste-down. Rub wear to edges and corners just worn through, but terrific condition.Binding and hinges are excellent. Name in ink on first and second free end paper. Some age-toning and a bit of foxing to prelims, especially contents pages. Several very nice illustrations throughout.This is the very first known book printed in America to contain an explanation of the most American game of baseball. Included is a plate showing boys on The Boston Common playing baseball with the State House in the background. This is a wonderful and very rare copy! In the book "Baseball Before We Knew It", by David Block, Tim Wiles, This volume is spoken of as "one of the crown jewels of early baseball books because it contains the first English description of a game identified as baseball, specifically "'base' or 'goal ball'"......" The woodcut in this volume of boys playing baseball on the Boston Common makes it's first appearance here and was much reproduced in several later books over the following decade."... "The Book Of Sports is prizes by collectors as a great American rarity, with only about a dozen copies known to exist".
