Description
This is one of the first Half Dollars struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the very productive year of 1834, as it has the Large Date and Large Letters. As the year progressed, first the letters and then the date were made smaller. But what a fascinating coin this particular specimen is! Note the doubling of the 4 in the date and of Star #8 ... both products of the die-making process. The date scan shows the 4 placed over an earlier 4 as well as a very late die state, with abrading of the die having obliterated some of the denticles near the date and in a few other places. But another RARE and fascinating feature of this coin is the reeding found on the edge before and after "FIFTY" and after "CENTS", but nowhere else on the edge! The Mint experimented with reeding the edges of Bust Halves off and on beginning in 1830 and I have seen several specimens with reeding all around, but this is the first one I have ever seen with reeding on only one half of the edge, apparently placed on only one of the two dies in the Castaing machine that struck the edges. Those two dies also overlapped in the striking of the edge, creating "OHALF", with the H struck over the R, classified by Overton as Edge Error #E4. What a combination of things that make Bust Halves so very special and fascinating! Grab this experimental coin and conversation piece before the next astute collector spots it!   FREE LAYAWAY PLAN:  When your total purchase is $200 or more you may elect to pay 1/3 down and the balance in two equal payments 30 and 60 days later, at no extra charge.   COIN GRADING AND CLEANING POLICY:  I do not clean coins but I cannot certify that any coin I sell has never been cleaned in its life, simply because I have not owned them for their entire lives, and until about 1970 coin cleaning was widely done and an accepted practice in the hobby.  Further, I do not represent that any raw coin I sell will be graded by any third party grading company or if so, what grade it will be assigned.  Coin grading is an art, not a science, and the grade assigned to any coin will vary from service to service and even from grader to grader.   RETURN POLICY:  If you are not pleased with any coin you purchase from me, you may return it within 7 days of receipt and I will refund every cent you paid for it.  Please email me before returning it to let me know it is coming.   OTHER AUCTIONS:  Please be sure to check out my other auctions and my website at www.grandoldhalves.us for more great buys on GrandOldHalves.  I handle Flowing Hair, Draped, and Capped Bust and Seated Halves dated from 1795 through 1891, plus an occasional Proof Barber or Walker and sometimes some nice Commemoratives.
