This popular variety exhibits an obverse die variety that has 10 stars to the left of Liberty and 6 stars to the right, in comparison to the two other varieties for 1797, which have the stars arranged 9 left and 7 right. A diagnostic die "dot" between the 7 and 9 makes the date appear to be 17.97. Medium silver-gray surfaces with hints of satiny luster in the most protected areas. A thoroughly pleasing coin for the grade, boasting remarkable visual appeal and a good strike. The surfaces are free of post-striking nicks and show only a small cluster of mint-made adjustment marks at the center of the obverse. This coin's smooth appearance and appealing gray patina more than make up for such defects, and the elusive nature of this date in higher grades should be well known to those interested in the series.
