Only about 15 proof 1831 N-3 cents are known in various grades, mostly with little or no original red color remaining. This exception has at least 50% original red, with pale bluish-brown toning on both sides, most noticeably at the center of the reverse. A small number of proof 1831 cents of other varieties are also known, bringing the total population for the date up to about 20 to 25 coins. Despite access to records of about 10 different proof examples of the variety, we are unable to determine the pedigree of this piece.
