This is a large group of Mardi Gras doubloons. This auction is for 1,000 Mardi Gras Doubloons from New Orleans and surronding areas. Since Hurricane Katrina it has been much harder for me to get large doubloon collections.  Many were destroyed by the storm so I am finding it much harder to get them now.  I still have a lot of doubloons to sell, but I don't anticipate getting them like I once did. These are great New Orleans collectibles that will only get harder and harder to get. The dates on these coins can vary from the 1960's to the present. Also, there are numerous colors of coins included. You will get a lot of coins from the 1960's and 1970's. There will be numerous Carnival organizations included in this lot. You can expect to find doubloons from the major Krewes like Rex, Comus, Momus, Jupiter, Pegasus, and Endymion. This is a chance for you to get an instant collection started. The box will contain a little over 1,000 coins and will be a good mix of years and colors. A lot of 1,000 doubloons can be used for many things. I have sold them to people for arts and crafts projects, to be used as poker chips, for their kids to play with, and many other reasons. These can also be used as Mardi Gras Party decorations. I've even sold these to a museum to use as fake treasure in a Pirate display. This collection should not have too many duplicates, and I always add a few extra coins to make up for any duplicates. For those of you who don’t know, Mardi Gras doubloons are brightly colored aluminum coins about the size of a silver dollar. They are thrown by Krewe members from Mardi Gras floats. Doubloons usually have the symbol of the Krewe on the front along with the date the Krewe was organized, the back side usually has the theme for that years parade as well as the date. Each Krewe may have a number of different doubloons for each years parade. Usually the silver ones are the most common, followed by a range of colors from red to gold. Some Krewes mint real bronze, silver and even gold doubloons, however these are very rare and seldom put up for sale. Many Mardi Gras doubloons are fairly rare outside of New Orleans, and many are rare even in the city. They make great inexpensive yet unique collectibles or gifts. I am in the process of auctioning a number of doubloons from my collection. The subject matter of my individual doubloon auctions vary a great deal. I have coins for a lot of different themes.
