Description
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 We purchased this 100 gold coin, 136cm (53.5in) chain many years ago as a potential gift. It was advertised as a “wedding belt”, but was more likely part of the dowry of a bride in the middle-east. (My apologies to those who know more about the terms and description than I do, if you email, I will add your comments to the listing) Each coin is variously called a quarter-altin, sultani, dinar, denar, ashrafi, or funduk. These coins measure 13mm (0.5in) in diameter (27% smaller than a US dime) by 0.4mm thick. Because they are linked, the weight of each coin can’t be measured, but they have been reported to vary from 0.33 to almost 1 gram. The coins were minted during the Ottoman Empire Sultanate of Mahmud II which began 1223 AH or 1808 AD and which were struck in the 20th (may be rare) to 24th year of that reign. The quality of each coin looks to be very good with little sign of circulation (they were in a chain!), however they of course have been soldered at four corners each. Two of the 400 solders are broken, which we have chosen not to repair in respect of the conservation measures of the purchasers. The workmanship on the chain is impressive, with each coin’s orientation matched from link to link.
