Description
DESCRIPTION Unique Hong Kong 1873 20 Cents Trial Pattern Hong Kong Royal Mint proof pattern or trial 20 cents 1873 in Imperial silver, PCGS PR64. This piece, while in appearance similar to the regular coinage, is struck on a planchet composed of Imperial (.925) silver. The obverse and reverse appear as superb deeply toned and turquoise proofs, while the edge reeding is exceptionally sharp. Interestingly, while the Royal Mint has no example, it does have two 1873 plain edge (but not proof) 20 cents pieces which Graham Dyer, Curator of the Royal Mint, believes are experimental pieces relating to the silver fineness. Specifications: Mint: Royal Mint. Obverse: As the currency. Reverse: As the currency. Edge: Reeded ('milled' or 'grained'). Metal: "Imperial" (Sterling) silver, i.e. .925 fine instead of standard HK fineness of .800. Weight: 5.48709 grams (normal is 5.43 grams). Die Axis: Inverted (180 rotation). Rarity: Not known in any private collection, and lacking at the Royal Mint and British Museum. Pridmore records no proofs for 1873 though the Remick collection, catalogued by Spink in 2006, was found to contain an 1873 20c proof. The Remick coin, though not so catalogued by Spink, was found to be plain edge, and while it had proof surfaces it had an unattractive blotchy, streaky tone on the obverse and a dark tone on the reverse. The Remick coin brought 8400 pounds or US 17,000. at the then rate of exch. Condition: Superb flawless proof, beautifully toned dark grey and turquoise. Comments: A highly important and previously unknown Hong Kong pattern. In 1873 great changes were occuring in the world's silver coinage. Due to major discoveries of silver in the American west, the price of silver was rapidly dropping. In the United States this lead to all 1873 US coins being struck in an increased fineness, this designated by arrows placed before and after the date. It also lead to the discontinuance of the US Silver Dollar in that year, and to the introduction of the United States Trade Dollar for circulation in East Asia, again in the same year. It would thus appear that the British Government considered raising the fineness in the British colonial coinages for East Asia-- specifically Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements -- from .800 fine to the Imperial standard of .925 fine. Thus this pattern or proof trial coin would be the result of these plans, which clearly however were not adopted. Reference: Pridmore unrecorded as a pattern or as a proof. This is the only 20c pattern or trial in the Hong Kong series. Though numerous pattern and trial mils, cash, cents, 10 cents, and dollars were prepared, the 20c apart from this unique exaample appears not to have been experimented with. Therefore it is highly recommended placing an absentee bid now to avoid disappointment. In some cases, the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Champion may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, those bids are treated just like floor bids.
