It contains 41.7 grams of 900/1000 fine gold and was minted with a full Proof finish.   The obverse design, an original work of art by the distinguished medallist James T. Ferrell, depicts Balboa at the moment he first sighted the Pacific Ocean.   The reverse bears the national coat of arms of the Republic of Panama, as sculptured by the internationally renowned medallist Gilroy Roberts.   The famous Spanish explorer Balboa, for whom the national currency is named, became the first European to see the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. In 1513 he crossed the Isthmus of Panama, the strip of land which connects North and South America.
